  1. I'm contemplating rebuilding my spare single rail (Spitfire 1500) gearbox to keep as a "ready to run" spare (rather than the box of bits it currently is) If possible I'd like to avoid a cheapy "kit" with unknown bearings, so I've been trying to source quality bearings. I'm led to believe that they are SKF  415997 (Triumph P/N 104433) .... cheapest I can source them so far is £57.92+VAT+carriage EACH. Does anyone have alternative numbers or suppliers for these things?
  2. For reference Sorry , link no longer available
  3. Wim, I have rear poly trunnion bushes fitted, been on the car about 3k miles, no issues so far. I got email confirmation that the dust shield etc is not needed when fitting the poly kit from superflex.... posted it somewheres on this forum at the time.
  4. I'm in the same position, I'm considering either a clamp in resonator in the straight section OR I hear fitting a GT6 mid-section achieves the same effect.
  5. You sure it's oil vapour and not fuel? Not sure about the MK IV,but my '78 1500 has a connection on the top of the fuel tank that needs blanking off... replacing the blanking got rid of 90% of the petrol fumes smell on my motor.
  6. Where are you based Tony? Might be worth enlisting the help of a local club member just to put a second set of eyes on the problem?
  7. The valve is above the float in the lid. Have a look at Rimmers/Canleys parts diagrams.... they might give you some hints.
  8. Starter for 10 can be found here: [Sorry, link no longer available]

  10. Beware! If you have a saggy rear spring you might find that the brakes on one side (or both) start to bind when the back end is on stands. As the wheels droop out of the arches it can "pull" the hand brake cable EVEN if the hand brake is off. It can make adjusting the rear brakes a total PITA.
  11. They do whine a bit as you go up through the revs (both mine have done) I'd see if you can get an "old person" (somebody with plenty old car experience) to listen to it....see if they think it's a problem. If it is a problem, disconnect the prop shaft and use a large(massive) screwdriver to listen to the box to see if you can identify the source. Be careful of the output flange spinning though. It's possible that the selector/synchro is rubbing, so touching/moving the stick causes the noise to change.
  12. Oil on the top of the cover is likely to have come out of the breather. If it's leaking under the edge of the cover plate then it's probably the gasket.
  13. Yeah, side shafts, flanges, oil seal plates etc....all handy if you end up with a damaged on in future.
  14. Went to see mum yesterday(Mum+step dad came to see us off at the start) copied some of their photos, have selected 3 from the start and uploaded them.
  15. Move the throttle "pusher" (#30 I think in the diagram) out of the way - see if the choke/jet will then return properly (just make sure it's not the throttle that's jamming the choke) Disconnect the jet from the choke mechanism and see if the choke spindle fully returns - that should tell you if the jet is jamming the choke mechanism of it the choke is keeping the jet too low (if you see what I mean)
  16. "What Bulb?" - I thought Martin was starting a magazine for light enthusiasts!
  17. Nick_Jones wrote:Is that HIGH quality or LOW quality.... :P  (pedant mode off) Thanks Mr. Pedant! They are all of "a quality" certainly, it was highly remiss of me to fail to specify!  ;) I'll give Canleys a ring and see what brand they are supplying.
  18. With Schaeffler now listing LUK clutches for the 1500 Spitfire as "no longer supplied by manufacturer" is there an alternative source of QUALITY clutch kits? Cheers, Sam
  19. Raider wrote:Smaller meetings? If it's possible newbies should go to their local area meetings. At Pendle and Pennine we have given best advice to first timers and this year arranged delivery of spares.  Our newbies also knew where those of us marshalling would be so they knew where there would be friendly faces. And much appreciated it was too!
  20. If you take the shaft off that links the 2 carb choke mechanisms together and the choke cable, you should see each jet snap back to the top  if you turn the choke cam and then let go. If not it's stuck or the springs are snapped/not working.
  21. Wim - the shaft/spindle that carrys the choke mechanism has 2 circular return springs on it. 34 a/b on here: http://www.canleyclassics.com/?xhtml=xhtml/diagram/spitfire1500carburettordetailstwincarbengine.html&xhtmlcatalogue=xhtml/catalogue/spitfire1500.html&category=fuelandexhaust&xsl=diagram.xsl
  22. Will see if I can find/take a pic for you Wim.
