  1. Are you replacing bearings? Or just the sun gear thrust washer? I managed to source branded (Timken) bearings to do mine. Setting the pinion pre-load on new bearings needs a method of measuring the torque required to turn the pinion/input flange in inch/lbs! I found a torque wrench on amazon. Preloading the carrier bearings and setting the backlash is a bit of a suck-it and see job if you don't have access to a bucket load of shims. I got about 5 or 6 thin shims from Moss-Europe and just set it as best I could with those and the originals.  Something like this comes in handy squashing that stupid spacer:
  2. Without going out and buying a specific conductive grease (which is not cheap!) copper grease is pretty much the next best thing.Just don't over do it! Even if it is conductive it's not AS conductive as a proper metal on metal contact.
  3. Sorry, I mis-read the original post. Newman list a cam for Sprints, but nothing for 1850 or 2l slant 4s. My mistake!
  4. Very neat looking new system! If I ever need a custom exhaust I'll be asking who you used to get it fabricated!
  5. I have a tin of grease on the shelf labelled "Lithium Moly CV Grease", might be worth having a search for something similar? comma-cv-lith-moly-grease-500g
  6. Might be worth a call to Newman cams, they list a Triumph 2.5 6 cylinder in their catalogue?
  7. We are currently #1 on the reserve list, so I think there's a pretty good chance we'll be taking part this year in Binny our 1973 Dolomite Automatic (1850):
  8. Cheaper? I'm already pretty suspicious of the unbranded bearings that most of the Triumph spares places are supplying. I ended up buying genuine branded Timken bearings from a bearing merchant for my Spitfire 1500 diff rebuild and it came to about 75 quid for all 6 bearings.  Not sure if the numbers I have are right for a '68 diff though.
  9. Do you have an inline filter? When my Spitfire was laid up the rubber seals in the filter shrank, so the pump was just pulling air and no fuel was reaching the carbs. Maybe you have a similar problem? A perished section of rubber hose allowing the pump to pull air?
  10. If you've changed the cylinders and still have the old cylinders handy it's worth squeezing the piston fully into the cylinder and measuring the width from the fixed face to the front of the piston and comparing that with the new one..... pattern replacements are not always the same and if the minimum size of the new one is significantly more than the old one you are never going to get the drums on.
  11. Hi All, I've for the diff from the spitfire in bits on the bench for new bearings/seals. I can't find my workshop manual anywhere. Does anyone have a copy of the set-up procedure for the crush spacer type diff? I bet the bloody book is in a box in the loft or something?! The Unipart workshop manual I have as a back-up doesn't cover the diff internals. Cheers, Sam
  12. Dave, I think you need to ignore the wind-up merchants/misery guts over on the TDC forum. They clearly take every opportunity to "know better".
  13. With at least 4 possibly 5 of us on the event we'd be looking for 2 rooms if possible Mike. How soon does the hotel need the deposit to secure the rooms? It's a tricky situation. How close to the event would it be possible to release any un-booked rooms back to the hotel to allow non-event bookings?
  14. I think the lack of reaction is down to the forum being pretty dead at the moment... the posting rate is well down and many of the "old regulars" don't seem to be around these days. If it's "pukka" £1000 sounds reasonable to me!
  15. Not sure of the validity but I was taught to always use a VERY LIGHT smear of grease on metal head gaskets. And I'm talking about "it feels like there's grease on it, but it's hard to tell by looking" light smear.
  16. Having discussed this with "the boss" we are in! Me, Andie, at least 2 of the kids, possibly 3 and a Triumph Dolomite!
  17. With one thing and another it's pretty unlikely that we'd be able to complete the run as a 2 person crew, and obviously the Spitfire only has 2 seats! So it's time for something with a few more seats and I've found a Dolomite 1850 that fits the bill! All being well I'll be amending our entry when I register the new car on the website on the 30th!
  18. Picking up what will be our RBRR 2018 car (assuming we make it off the reserves list and onto the event) on the 30th of December.
  19. We might just be able to do this one! Not in the Spitfire and possibly with the kids dragged along. 🙂
