  1. Yup, but wasn't this discussion about using in a Vitesse? So a little short geared for that. Possibly good for Herald though!
  2. I have a load of steering racks for parts - can't comment on the condition of any of them - but I can find a good one in the lot (have about 10 racks I think) - so I can find a half decent one that just needs gaiters and rod-ends maybe?
  3. Colin, I'll reply to your email shortly, however, I can confirm that Alex and I would like to participate in the Novice group so we are doing it competitively.
  4. Hmm, thanks for that Mike. I'll see if AJ wants to risk having a go at proper navigation or just having a drive in the beginner class. She's usually up for a challenge though.
  5. Tony - I'll have a check as it may be my Vitesse has a Dolly mount on it (it's a bit of a hybrid), if it doesn't then it'll be available.
  6. Cheers Colin, I'll drop them down and see what's what. It's not too hard to check on afterall. Is Chris Witors stock okay, or is there anywhere with known good ones? The bushes at the ends of the cross member SHOULD be good as they are poly-bush ones I fitted before the 2012 RBRR (Or Alex fitted when the gearbox was fitted, I forget)
  7. Hi all, I think there is a chance the gearbox mount on my Mk1 has collapsed - when under the car you can barely see the mount in the cross-member, which makes me think it's failed and dropped. Certainly the gear-lever seems to move around a lot. The engine mounts look fine. Is there any way I can check the security of the mount without removing it from the car? I guess I could drop the cross-member off easily enough. I have a new old stock Metallastic mount from a Dolomite, will this fit? The car (for those that don't know) has a 2.5L engine with an overdrive box fitted. I guess it can't be that complicated to change? Jack under the gearbox body, then the cross member mounting nuts off, drop down and remove as appropriate?
  8. I got one for ten dollar off the internet...
  9. Have now taken delivery of the Essex map for this - getting quite excited to actually participate in a rally rather than just organise one!
  10. Well, late Midgets did use the Triumph engine in a form, so it might be do-able on a Spitfire 1500 / Herald 1500.
  11. Quick Google Shows; Hijet (1.3L efi) 3.769 (1st) 2.045 1.376 1.000 0.838 (5th) Final Drive 4.44 In my head that'd give you a 4th gear top speed of about 85mph if using the original Vitesse Diff... So still not relaxed cruising.
  12. Not sure if that box will do that - with it being for a 1.3L van, there's a good chance the gears will be totally wrong. Worth looking into though - nothing wrong with being original in thinking. I wonder what the gear ratios are...
  13. If you think the starter motor is slow, have you checked the wiring to the starter? The starter cables on my car were crap, and turned out to be part of the starting issue I was having. I bought new cable from Vehicle Wiring products (I think, they're in Ilkestone) and solder on ends and now it's much better.
  14. Do you have electronic ignition fitted? I had a Lumenition unit fitted that gave very odd behaviour. In the end I junked it off and fitted a new old stock set of Lucas points and condenser... ran fine after that. However, as has been suggested, I'd advise checking timing first.
  15. If you can travel a little further, KD Triumph is in Coventry just off the M6, close to the M69 junction. Tell him Jimbo sent you...
  16. Others would be able to tell more, but as I understand it, the head was the same on all 1200, 12/50 and possibly 13/60 engines too? Certainly I think the inlet and exhaust valves are the same, but the manifolds are different between 1200 and 12/50.
  17. Possibly, but I have just told the vehicles owner that this is the correct position and he is happy as I have proved it to be correctly fitted. Now to replace the indicator switch after the wires fell apart upon removal 😲
  18. Are you sure the 'C' in 'CD; isn't a badly stamped 'G'? If that is the case then you could have a Herald 12/50 engine, which block-wise I believe to be the same as the 1200 engine block.
  19. Go-faster-'stance'? Can you post the picture the right way round, I'm finding it hard to assess the level of camber on that as the photo is upside down.
  20. Hi all, I fitted an overdrive switch to a Mk3 Spitfire at the weekend, and the guy I did it for isn't entirely happy with the on/off position. Basically, when the OD is off the switch is up, and then when the switch is down it is on. Is this the conventional way round, and if not how do you swap it round? In my head you can't as there's only two wires, so it doesn't matter which way round you wire the switch in, it will still only be on or off in the same position. The switch is currently to the right of the column, switching between around 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock position. Thanks, Jon
  21. Yes, copperslop is good, or graphite grease. You really want something waterproof that offers good lubrication and anti-seize properties to stop it happening again. For this, Copperslop is the best.
  22. I have made up a pair of 'z' frames that will mount to the body, sandwiching the radiator to the front panel. Initially I'm just making it out of strips of aluminium, but if I find it's running a bit warm I've got plans to knock up a shroud that the fan will attach to, which will sit in the nosecone. That'll be made out of sheet aluminium and either pop-rivetted or tig welded together. Process to be updated next weekend when back in the workshop!
  23. I still have the banners I used on the Warks Scatter - will it be possible to bring them down to this event to give to someone to hand back to Tina, or someone else who can look after them?
