  1. That's fair enough. I was just curious if you'd already got one or not. Not sure what the weight saving is of the alloy back plate, but if you buy a Porsche GT4 Club Sport Cayman track-only car, which is 40kg lighter than standard, it will cost you £40,000 extra. £1000 per kilo seems an expensive weight save!
  2. When you say 'remove weight', I take it you don't have an aluminium one fitted already then? Is that an option compared to webbing out a steel one?
  3. It's not perfect, but the Canleys website uses the old factory drawings (I think, I'm sure Dave will be along to correct me if I'm wrong), and they give an idea of layout. To reiterate what Dale has said, I had a fantastic time yesterday, and it's my first event of this type, but hopefully not the last. I have done a grass auto-test before, but I didn't enjoy that. Yesterdays Tarmac event though was brilliant, even if I was in totally the wrong car. I am now on the hunt for an LSD though. Thanks to all the marshalls, scrutineers, volunteers, and people that took part, and I hope everyone had fun. Maybe next time if I don't have a working Triumph I'll take the MX5 instead - Tabitha Bland made the courses look easy, even if a few cones were killed!
  7. Reading what you said at the start my guess would have been fuel vapourisation in the hot engine bay. Used to happen on the Lotus Elan, so when stopping or filling up, Dad had to pop the bonnet to allow the hot air out and this prevented the vapour lock.
  8. I know I won't win in a 5 series Colin, so I may as well enjoy myself. Plus it'll need new tyres for MOT anyway.
  9. Ah, that's fine then - just to clarify, I'm not saying I'm a good driver at all, I just want to have a bit of fun with the car in a safe environment.
  10. Bollox - Your DIGG GT6 is a work of art, and far better than I could do. Just because I have a pile of old cars and bits does not mean anything... Anyway... Thank you for the points about copper, but as Alec has said, Automec (who's brake pipe and fittings I will be using) say there is no difference between the two. However, as I have suitable kunifer pipe too I may use that. I think the flaring tool I have bought is up to the job on copper, kunifer and aluminium. Thankyou for the pointers all. Now I just have to hope that the flare form is correct. (SAE, DIN etc...)
  11. There is a thing in the regs about driving standards and safety. It reads like sliding a car is not allowed - which was the whole point in me entering in the 5 series...
  12. Thanks guys, will be using copper pipe as I already have some of the right size. Could you tell me what the flair profile is though? There seem to be loads of different types and I have no idea what is the one I need.
  13. Ah, this is what you sent me the other day. I couldn't see in the photos before, but as as been said, those brackets should not be welded on, which is why you couldn't adjust your bonnet down. Also the over-rider carrier looks to be damaged too - as Mark's photo shows, the two mounting holes are at angles to each other, yours are both vertical which is incorrect. In fact, where that ripple is in the side shows the damage. As I said before, the 'T' shaped piece that carries the front valance is not correct, at least it does not appear to be original. Please excuse the poor drawing... Red shows where it shouldn't be welded, blue circles the ripple indicating the damage, and the black is meant to indicate the correct shape of the over rider mount.
  14. Hi all, I need to make new brake pipes for my 2000 mk1 - when I was removing the flexi-lines the old steel lines fractured. To be expected as they looked original to the car! I have copper and kunifer pipe I can use that I think is the right diameter (around 0.18", which I think is 3/16"). However, assuming that the pipe is the right diameter, can anyone tell me what the flare form is that I need on the ends of the pipe? One end will go into the 4-way adapter on the inner wing by the battery box, and the other end will route under the chassis rail in order for the new flexi-line to attach to it. Can anyone tell me the right thread forms (SAE / DIN etc?) and if they are 3/8 long or short I need on the 4-way adapter. Thanks, Jon

  16. Right, as we are now two months away I figured it would be a good idea to get the paperwork available for all the crews. Please note the following main points; Start and finish times will be the same as before, BUT start and finish location are no longer in Corley. I have moved the event south in the county to take advantage of new roads etc that I haven't taken the previous events into. Lots of fun roads, that are generally pretty quiet. The venue is close to the Gaydon Motor Museum, so an area, most people are vaguely aware of at least. Entry fee is the same as last year. If you wish to get an entry form off to me early, you are welcome to, but officially the entries open at the start of June for CT. 24 spaces available again, it would be fantastic to get a full contingent from CT!

    Well, I had a set back on the workshop I was getting - a set back that means I can't have it any more BUT the guy I was going to rent it off has found me something else, possibly even more suitable. Unfortunately though, it won't be ready for me to take tenancy in until the start of June, and then it'll need painting and wiring etc... So this has set the project back somewhat, but it'll still happen as far as I'm concerned! Anyway, The main thing I need to know is what size of tube can pass through the clamp on the front of the engine block, just after the manifold - downpipe joint, as to some degree that will determine what size pipe I can use - either that or make special clamps for the stainless exhausts.

    Also, that link is for a company in America I think, so they will be LHD type (If there is any difference). Also, they have a Cat, and I don't think the Acclaim was ever fitted with a Cat. It could be a way forward. Okay Simon, I will focus my attention on making stainless exhausts, with the understanding that the materials and labour will be more costly. For instance, when welding stainless, it should be back purged, which means that gas useage is much more than mild.

    Right, success!! I have a new workshop! Lovely location on a farm in the middle of no-where(ish). I take possession of it on Sunday (1st May). There IS work to do before I move in - update electrics, lighting and slap some paint about the place, but importantly,it's dry and a nice big space, with no restrictions on what time I can work and who I can have there. It's got CCTV too so a bit of security is nice. I won't be moved in until the end of May realistically, but from then onwards I will be happy to do this project! So, tasks in hand; Barry or anyone with an Acclaim, can you please confirm what size the bracket on the front of the block can take? There is no point in me using 44.4mm tube if that won't fit in the clamp, or through any of the other areas. Simon (or anyone else) - If I use your car as a 'template' for the prototype system I will be more than happy to help you get back home, either giving a lift back some of the way or just to a train station etc. In terms of material, using stainless will make it a much more expensive proposition. Would it be worth while doing a short run in mild steel, seeing how they sell and then investigate making a run in stainless then? Or would this be likely to counter that and in fact we'd end up with a load of Acclaims with good mild systems and no customers to want stainless? One thing worth investigating is how many Acclaims are still on the road? Howmanyleft says 170. Surely there must be more than that out there?
  23. Or do it correctly and leave the large lock nut and allen screw alone! These set the preload or something. To adjust the column height you need to loosen the two 7/16" headed nuts on the block.

  25. As I have a few spare dizzy's I may get it converted, then I can always have a normal one in case it packs up.
