  1. Yup, as Rob has indicated, on your bearings 010 U/S will mean 'ten thou UNDERsized'. Pistons are 'overbored', so the pistons are 'oversized' and bearings are ground smaller so are 'undersized'. Most people will know what you mean, but it depends how fussy you are. As for the actual engine, although it may have been running well before, now everything has been disturbed you'll really want to at least get rid of the lip on the bore and the crank MIGHT polish up and not need grinding. Measure each journal in at least three places, which will take into account ovality of the journal. This will tell you the wear variations. Also, don't use a vernier, you'll really need a micrometer.
  2. Marc, the eBay listing is clearly for inner arches, bowls and wings, so exactly the same equivalent of what I quoted from BMW, which is why I chose the E30 coupe as the body construction is similar to the Spitfire in that example.
  3. Might weaken the sill doing that by a fair bit, having said that, the strength could be put back in with extra ribs and extra support between the inner sill and the floor.
  4. Hi all, A guy I work with is building a Spitfire at the moment. He's got a single rail gearbox in it, and at the weekend he decided to change the oil in the gearbox. When he drained it, there was a chunk of metal on the magnetic drain plug. He took the top off the box, and found in the bottom of the box a form of washer or spacer, around the diameter of a 10 pence piece and around an 8th of an inch thick. There was no obvious play on the gears and it all selected okay, although he hasn't run the box. Any ideas where it might be from in the box?
  5. To an extent, there's press fit and interference fit, which are basically the same thing. The new ones are indeed press fit.

  7. There are various options, but I would say to do some research into what is available. A website like Black Circles is good for comparison purposes, so you can see fuel useage, wet grip etc, noise etc. Just remember that the tyre is the only thing holding you on the road, so don't skimp!!
  8. BMW E30 rear quarter panels are; Inner arch - £300 / £150 depending on side (one side is distinctly more complicated) Outer Bowl - £140 Outer Wing Panel - £420 So, double those, add VAT and for the same job on a 1980s BMW you're looking at £1900, and that is assuming there are any in the UK and aren't on special order from Germany. It's a lot of money, but it reflects the growing prices of Spitfires and all classic cars, although I agree, it would be nice if the panels some how go towards reproducing proper panels. Lloyd, where are you??

  11. Hahaha - I like the idea of buying a car just for a track day, that's one excuse I have not used yet!

  13. If you do strip it out and put a rubbish County one in that won't put up with this, I suggest you keep hold of this piston as a keepsake. Cool little bit of garage art etc.
  14. My guess is it's suffered a broken valve on one side and the crescent shaped gauge is the side of the valve head, and possibly the other gauge is from the end of the broken valve stem. the circular marks are likely to be from as YS said, the other valve dropping into the engine. How long have you been running this engine for Hallum? If it's more than a few years, you'll probably get away with it, even if it's not the 'right' thing to do.

    Acclaim exhaust

Hi everyone - I'm moving workshops this weekend - got a good chunk done last night and today, so hopefully I'll get over there completely in the next two days. That being the case it won't be too long until I can start looking at getting these exhaust pipes done! Will post again when I'm settled in!
  16. Yup, I think it's on the ARP site, and certainly in a set of ARP bolts I had a while ago, the type of lube you use changes the torque setting needed - as it changes the friction.
  17. 3rd entry in now - will post names and cars from the 1st when the event opens officially.
  18. Mine has that too, as have my other cars. Dave, the washer does have a D-hole in to match the ignition switch, but it's basically just a square bit of metal with the corners bent up to dig into the back of the dash.
  19. Coventry area - but if it's cleaned up it can be posted easily enough as it won't weigh much at all.
  20. If you struggle to find a sump I can do the welding for you, PM me. I have done other welding for people on here (Clifty Hanger and Richard B's daughter)
  21. Probably a mouse... I have heard stories of sandwiches being found in the bores of engines back in the day, who knows if it's a true story. Sorry to side track, as you were chaps.
