Grrrr more money
-
Right fixed my engine hoist a 25 eBay purchase and mounted the engine side on to the engine mount.
I have removed the bearings from my 1600 vitesse engine. The big end bearings are +30 does this mean they have had work before? The mains seem standard but the crank has a noticeable ridge on the journal does it need machining?

About £ 10 - 12 per valve usually for the inserts (exhaust only). £ 5 - 8 to fit/ream new guides and cut seats without inserts. Adds up. If they are supplying the valves and guides that adds a fair bit!
6 pot always at least 50% more expensive to do compared to 4 pot for obvious reasons.....
Nick
I have the seats here... -
just getting around to getting the head skimmed and enquiring as to prices to have some u/l valve seats put in too.... OMG over £200. I think my four pot had this and valve guides for a little over £100. Is this a normal price?

Liking your split pin idea. The pin is solid tried drifting it out no good.
-
I'll have to drill the pin out of my rocker shaft to replace some bits on it. Canleys dont list the Millers pin which its meant to use, anyone have an idea what the roll pin dimensions would be, i expect thats the favoured route for replacement.

Cam bearings in a 6....... you've really got to want them! Don't think any of them had them as standard and getting the block bored for them is expensive, always assuming you can a find machine shop to do it - one that can actually do it right that is, not just one that thinks they can. Unless you are planning a monster cam and high rpms it's really not worth the aggro!
Nick
Just crossed it off the list.
Nick was it your 1600 with the original expansion tank for water? What carbs u got on?
-
I'll take some photos, not too bad in all honesty.
Hadnt thought of Cam bearings , thought of mains and big end bearings! -
It looks like the engine old head gasket had a leak on one of the cylinders as there is a little pitting on the block around one cylinder. Not much mind. The area around water galleries has a little pitting. The head valves are set back quite a way on the head so should be ok.

Herald 4 pot which took us around in 2016 is going to develop 2 more for a Vitesse 6 engine
-
Think I'll get em skimmed then. When you say deck them down what do you mean?
-
The top of my project 1600 engine has signs of corrosion around the water galleries, whats recommended a light sand or some engineering. Given the little bean can piston come up to the top of the block there isnt much to play with.

[mem]Nick Jones[/mem] Nick did you have dimensions for your plate?

Housing? I thought we were talking water pumps....
Having re-read my OP I didnt make clear it was the housing i was after. -
Ok cheers just bidding on a housing on evil bay
-
Ok I know the later heads were machined differently, dies that make any difference to the things?
-
When you say standard I have one from a herald 13/60 will that work
-
I have acquired a Vitesse 1600 Engine to drop into the Herald at some point (hopefully before next years RBRR). It didnt come with some bits, one of which is the water pump.
I have checked Canley Classics web site and it lists a part which doesnt seem to appear on other engines. In short what Water pump can i use on a Vitesse 1600 engine -
I have acquired a Vitesse 1600 engine. Not a bad price need a good clean and service. The head is off and with compressed air i have been blowing out the water passage ways. What i have noticed is the studs holes which hold the rocker cover on have a hole at the bottom to the water gallery. Is this intended, i guess it must be and the studs put in place with sealant.

A 1300 hundred Herald engine. I am off to pick up a 1600 engine tomorrow but i has no carbs. Apart from the headlights I'll end up with a Vitesse 6 with OD. ... hopefully.
-
yes came with a Stanpart manifold, looking at various diagrams on the Canleys website i am thinking they may be gt6 mk carbs. The manifold matches the GT6 one.
The bottom of the carbs has a large flat slot plug as opposed to a slot to screw the jet up. No temperature compensators either -
I think these are from a vitesse MK2 . Could be wrong though.
Would they work with a 1600 engine? Or do I need to change needles.

Given my brakes are single circuit and designed decades ago... i treat them with caution and leave a good gap
-
I've done near enough 100 miles now and feel better bite than el cheapo pads.
Johnd I hear what you are saying... These are fine for my use 60-70mph on roads with decent brake by gap.

Got the crank out this morning no scoring apart from the ridges on the two centre Mains. The outside Mains don't have any ridges at all.
With the pistons out there is a slight lip at the top of the bore presumably where the piston rings reach.
