Stag Brakes - your feedback please!

Hello again!

Its time to order some front brakes for the stag.....

What are you guys using and what works well? - i'd like to hear from a few different people.

My front discs and calipers are only fit for the scrap pile so I need to order new stuff. The rear end is rebuilt as stock with new shoes plus braided hoses.

Is a standard solid disc with branded pads (EBC, ferrodo, mintex etc) and braided hoses really up to modern traffic and  day - to day driving? Not talking track day use but will be travelling with kids in the back and no doubt a boot full of crap.

The budget is spread very thin now but if the upgrade kits are really worth it i'll take another look (wilwood, monarch 4 pot....)

Any feedback (good or bad) appreciated.

Cheers,

:)

A decent set of original discs and calipers, with pads of a material better than lots of the dross on offer now-a-days should be more than up to the job.

So Mintex 1144 may be a good idea.

Braided hoses will remove some of the slight sponginess from the system.

Make sure the servo is working properly, the correct amount of assistance will help.

Also makesure there is the correct amount of play in the wheel bearings, as too much will cause pad push back giving more pedal travel.

You will probably need to use the old calipers as exchanges, but if not, let me know.

Cheers

Colin

Thanks for your replies.

There are 2 (yes 2!) LH calipers fitted so I may have to pay the surcharge on any refurb'd calipers.

Good to know the standard set-up can be made to made with some modest / sensible upgrades.

Cheers!

The best upgrade I found for mine was putting in fresh brake fluid and braided flexi Hoses to replace the collapsed rubber items.  Even the one or two specialists who have driven the car have been surprised by the stopping power :).

I have Mintex M1144s on my Pug 205 GTi and have tried them on other cars with similar results.  A very good all round pad I would say.  But they will wear your discs out faster (with the pad itself lasting longer, but on the other hand with the mileage the Stags do, this should not be an issue).

Many people have had good results with EBC pads but I personally could not recommend them.  The Greenstuff pads I have tried on a number of cars seem to have poor bite from cold with them not really offering much more (if anything) over a set of OE spec pads.  Even their Reg 90 pads seem be worsen brake performance on my daily when compared with Halfords pads (yes I was desperate to get working brakes again!)!.

The next modification I will probably do on the brake front to my Stag would be to fit a set of M1144s :).  Great bite from cold with improved braking performance all round.  They are slightly noisier however if you brake hard with them.

I am running "greenstuff"pads, new discs, stainless dust shields  and braided hoses.
Stops as good as any Stag ever will!

Green stuff pads are a fine example of how the marketing whizz kids can manipulate people to part with good money for trendy branded and overpriced mediocrity - I expect the premium is charged for the 'wooden' feel. Bog standard Mintex pads will do the job perfectly well for normal road use, better actually, and cost significant less.

This is exactly what I found with the cars I have driven with them in and the cars I had them fitted to.  I can only guess that the owners were comparing them to poor braking systems (glazed pads, dodgy old fluid (something IMO many drivers of whatever car seem to forget about)  etc.) where simply renewing the relevant parts and servicing them would have sufficed.

Trying to brake from 60MPH in a RenaultSport Clio 172 with new discs, EBC Greenstuff pads and fresh Motul RBF600 brake fluid with your foot hard on the floor is never a great experience.  Going to M1144s transformed that setup, almost as if it had another set of brakes present :).

I have Stag brakes all round on the pi, including servo and m/c. I have just replaced the front pads with some NOS abestos laden Ferodos, what I took out were NOS ones too and apart from the brake dust that they deposit over the wheels I couldn't be happier with them. They even managed a few laps at a time of trackday abuse without fading!
The other great thing about the NOS pads is no sign of wear to the discs, just like it used to be years ago before pads were made of wear resistant material that eats discs.

The estate has Stag fronts and they are nowhere near as good under pressure, shouldn't have put asbestos free pads in them. They have done 20k miles so far and still don't need changing. No brake dust hardly though!
I know what I would rather have though and it isn't clean wheels at the bottom of a long hill!

Hmmm, I wonder if that is one reason why my Stag brakes are great (Asbestos pads).  Either I drive the car too hard, or the wheels get dirty far too quickly (read the fronts are notably going black on the front after barely a week's worth of driving (4 trips out tops!).  The Dolomite Sprint on completely new brakes and my MGB (on stainless sleeved callipers) did not compare in comparison.

New front pads on the pi have done 40miles tops and the wheels are already dusted!
Pads are bedded in nicely now though, had a trip to a local meet and back with my spitfire driving mates.........that sorted them.

Trackday Friday will get the self adjusting mechanisms in the back really adjusted too.(whistle)
