A sender in the sump will give you some idea of the bulk oil temperature in the region of the sender. That's not really what you're interested in. My brother had one in the sump drain plug hole on his Spitfire and it was next to useless.
The best place from a usefulness perspective is probably just after the oil filter - if you have a cooler then the return hose is good. On the 6 cylinder engine there's a big aluminium plug just above the filter, which would be a good place. The tricky thing is to find somewhere it will go in easily without restricting flow.
If you only want it temporarily... that's a bit tricky.
