Sixlover
Hi, my son's new Renown is fortunate to have the impressive radiator cap mascot, but we can't work out what it represents. I don't recall our family Renown having one (HXN 384)Can anyone enlighten us?Martin
Saltddirk
Martin,If original it should represent a flaming torch. The early ones did not have a mascot, they had a plain cap similar to the Roadster, the torch was added from TDB (1950) models onwards together with the change in instruments and chassis layoutDont ask me why a flaming torch, have no clue.D
Sixlover
Thanks, Dirk.I guess the flaming torch speaks of high standards?Martin
Saltddirk
I was tempted to change mine,It has a commy ring to it IMO,Forwards you commie brothers onto the breaches for a new and braver world we carry this torch... :X ;D
Sixlover
Hadn't even thought about the political side of it!It does seem an odd emblem, though there is the Olympic principal in there somewhere maybe. And we did host the Olympics in 1948, just before the new Triumphs came along?Cheers,Martin
JohnD
Flaming torch? Communists?? You have much to learn young Tory!!!Thatcher introduced a flaming torch symbol for the Tory Party, and it persisted in various forms until Cameron promised the Greenest party ever, and then went back on it.John
Saltddirk
It evokes an mental image in me of those early propaganda posters of Whathis name Cheremnykh or whatever Eisenstein made,no political affiliation intended, I don't think that Black qualified for a party membership card.In fact I must be the most a-political person you can meet, would not even know what tories are.Anyhow, this is what they remind me offD
Sixlover
IS it a flaming torch? Or is it just a conical object surmounted by a laurel wreath? The fact remains we did host the Olympics in 1948.Martin
Saltddirk
Who will tell,I have always heard it referred to as flaming torch

JohnD
This is a fascinating mystery! No offence, I hope, saltddirk! Was this a Olympic (1948 ) remnant? One for the archivists, I think. Pity the TSSC msb isn't up - they are good on history. The Torch as a symbol seems to be largely apolitical, used to signify the passing on of hope or enlightenment in many societies, and certainly not only in socialist ones - Thatcher's Torys and of course America's Statue of Liberty, which "lifts her lamp beside the Golden Door"!John

Roger Stone
The mascot is definitely intended to be a stylised flaming torch, and I believe was also the symbol of HMS Renown, battlecruiser, which was decommisioned after a heroic history in June 1948. Someone in the club will know for sure.

Saltddirk
hijust had a mail from John Bath, the TROC historicanhe is also convinced that it is linked to the HMS Renown, but has asked Tom who has done some research into this for confirmationso no commie connections, no olympics either it would seem....D
Sixlover
Tis a long way from those insignia to the rad cap emblem of the car, but ...maybe. I prefer it as a story to the Olympics. I hate sport!Martin
