A solid lump like a plug or a bolt has a diameter, which will expand. A little.
A nut or the insert for a sump plug has a circumference, 2Pi times the diameter.
It will therefore expand over six times more than the bolt/plug.
And loosen!
Ever put pistons in boiling water to loosen the gudgeon pin?  That's aluminium, with a much larger coeff.expansion than steel, but same difference.

Well I fianally managed to get the sump plug out using one of those Irwin sockets - it didn't give up the fight easily though!  Thanks for the tip Wolf.

I then changed the filter but didn't notice the old seal had stuck to the block preventing the new filter from seating properly. I started the car, oil light went out after a couple of seconds, all looking good until I checked the filter and the oil had POURED out - WHAT A MESS, almost every last drop!!  Luckily  I had a drip tray in place which caught most of it but still a fair amount all over the block, sump, chassis and driveway.
