Rear shock absorbers - latest thoughts?

Recommended Posts

After replacing the rear springs on my TR7 the offside KYB shock absorber leaked oil when I returned the car to the ground.

Looks like I need a new pair of shocks - they are the same as Triumph 2000 ones.

If I go for adjustables what should I buy and what setting should I use (uprated 200lbs springs fitted).

AVO and GAZ a bit cheaper at about 155.00 a pair

A bit more cheaper here:

Don't go for the AVO's as they are to long, and I had two Spax sets and they both were ... euhh ... rubbish after only a few years.
Maybe both got their act sorted by now, but I won't try them ever.
And as Koni's seem to be getting scarce (as in unobtainable) I'd go for GAZ or KYB, as the general consensus on them is pretty good.

It used to be possible to contact them directly with any questions, but that service has gone.
And they don't list saloon or TR7 shock absorbers anymore.

They are part of ITT now, so I fear the worst, it looks like another perfectly good company is going down the drain soon  :-/

On the other hand maybe there still is some hope left according to Neil Revington's website (not cheap though but as ever you get what you pay for ...)

I beg to differ!

On 12/05/1988 an axle set of spax adjustables cost £54.00 so they've always been pricey...however regarding reliability, the receipt for them came with the pile of papers I got with my car. They're still on there, the yellow paint is flaking off and there's some rust on the outside but the adjusters are still working and the shocks still work fine.

Regarding adjustment, start soft and work up until you find a setting you like.

That's a good price.

I have, however, gone for non adjustable like the KYBs I had before.

These Spax were on offer at Rimmers and slightly cheaper than KYBs I had seen in the UK so I'll see if I have done the right thing. If budget constraints weren't there I think It would have gone for GAZ.

As I needed other bits at the same time (including for my Rover) I didn't have to pay two lots of postage if I had bought from two suppliers
