Anthony
One of my friends has a Vitesse which until recently has a squeaky front endWe managed to track it down to the washers that mount between the spring-top-plate and the top-shock-bushesAfter fixing the squeaks we noticed not all shocks have these kinds of washers in place, or at least they don't have them picturedCan anyone tell me why some do, and some don't have them, and what's the best thing to do to avoid squeaks coming from themThanks

Anthony
Part Number: 123231Some shocks seem to only have two washers per shock, whilst others (Spax) have four washers eachhttp://www.canleyclassics.com/?xhtml=xhtml/diagram/gt6mkiiilowerwishboneroadspringanddamper.html&xhtmlcatalogue=xhtml/catalogue/gt6mkiii.html&category=axlessuspensiondriveshaftsandwheels&xsl=diagram.xslhttp://www.mevspares.co.uk/images/P/frontdampers.jpghttp://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/ItemImages/Large/RL1514.jpg
Docman
My GT6 developed the same squeak. Annoying, particularly when I figured out what a silly fix it was.
Anthony
Bob, how did you fix yours?I was thinking it might be a good idea to coat/paint the washer with the same stuff used for the spring top mount? My thinking is if they're covered in the same stuff they'll wear at the same rate and not squeak?Any sense in that? Or should I leave the washers as just regular zinc coated metal?
CHRIS211083
All the shocks need you to refit these washers as they stop the top nut biting through the top bush. I think your problem with the squeak is the quality/age of the rubber bush nothing to do with the Washer. See if you can get polybush ones as these self lubricate so should stop any noise. However the other easier option is to tighten the nut down as it sounds like its too loose. Give the bush a good squish when you tighten it and then it wont move.Chris. Docman
Additional tightening seemed to take care of my problem (at least for the time being) - the squeak was right side only.
GT6Craig
Might seem a bit daft, but can you replace the top shocker bush with the spring/shock in place?(provided the full weight of the car is on all 4 wheels)

Pete Lewis
some bushes have a shoulder to give the bush centralised location others are plain bush an use a washer with a raised spigot to centralise its one of the most anoying and hard to track down squeaks , its easy to replace the top bushes with the car sat on its wheels , hold the shocker stem which should have flats to effect a spanner fit and remove the locknut and base nut, pull off top bush and washer, press the shocker stem thro' the hole and remove the underside bush, . if the shocker stem pops out of line , reposition and pull back up thro' the turret.do not grasp the shocker stem with moles or pliers or the next bump will show it now leaks,Pete
CHRIS211083
Sorry guy's but stop Fcuking About!!! Just take the shock off and do it properly. Good practice is something that we should inforce. I can have both sides dismantled on my drive and refitted in an hour tops!!! Chris.
Slimboyfat
peterhlewis wrote:do not grasp the shocker stem with moles or pliers or the next bump will show it now leaks,PeteGoing back a few years ago I had a rash of cars with recently fitted AVO's (I think) coming into the workshop leaking from the piston seals. It turns out the Triumph specialist that had been selling/fitting them had been using the above method to fit them.We sold quite a few sets of Konis as a result! One of the customers was so fed up he chucked the knackered AVO's in the bin when we showed him what had happened. When he left the apprentice fished them out and sent them off to AVO who rebuilt them for a small charge!
Van
There should be no need for washers between the top plate and the bushes, as the top plate has shaped recesses to take the bushes. I have Spax which were supplied with 4 washers so I left 2 of them out.The order of the parts is shock - washer - bush - top plate - bush - washer - nut - locknut
Anthony
Yeah, I spotted the washers that are built in to the top-plateThat, along with different manufacturers providing different amounts of washers was the thing that confused me
