thomas
Hi,has anyone tried the u.j. that Rally Design do for the Mk1 Escort on their Spit? Are there any problems besides having to move the column back a little? I presume the pressed steel one as opposed to the cast part is up to the job ? lordleonusa
Why buy it from Rally Design?I am pretty sure that it is the exact same unit as sold by Bill Davies of Rarebits4classics.comand yes, it is better than the original.it doesn't depend on rubber washers!L
thomas
Buy it from Rally because it's considerably cheaper ! Eliminating the rubber washers is obviously the way to go but possibly puts a little bit more loading on the pinion bearing due to the slight misalignment that's taken up by those washers but unlikely to be of much concern.Just wanted to check that the Escort one fits. Jason
I found it a bit of a fiddle to fit this type of joint but the hassle was worth it.
Nick Moore
As I understand it, there are two UJ-type steering couplings on the market. The Rally Design one is larger than Bill's, and it may be necessary to grind some metal off the right hand suspension turret to fit it.Nick
heraldcoupe
There are plenty of different couplings on the market. Off the top of my head I can think of five designs which nominally fit, ie have the same spline pattern, but have different lengths and widths. I can think of a further handful of styles which are visually similar, but don't match the spline pattern.I've no idea what type is used on Fords, either original or aftermarket, I leave that to the Ford specialists. Before buying any coupling, establish whether you have the tall or short pinion on your steering rack. With the short pinion, the slimline coupling will fit without any problems. With the tall pinion, even the slimline coupling has limited clearance as it runs very close to the suspension turrett. Adequate clearance can sometimes be gained by using a short nyloc on the upper pinchbolt. In other cases it's necessary to grind either the turret, or the edge of the coupling. This is one of those "at customers own risk" issues.By comparison, using one of the larger couplings will need modifications to any Spitfire before it can be used, there simply isn't adequate clearance,Cheers,Bill. thomas
thanks fellas,I don't want to waste the guts of 25 euro on something that wont fit so will check the clearance issues. I removed the old one and changed the washers with some I had in store but after a thousand miles or so the play was back. I want to change this thing and not have to do deal with it again. Aparently Marinas have one the fits too but there as rare as an honest politician over here.
heraldcoupe
I thought Marinas used the saem rubber coupling as the standard Herald/Spitfire type?Cheers,Bill.
thomas
possibly Bill, not having seen one I don't know but if they do then they're obviously no good at all to us.

Tim Bancroft
Must say I would rather buy from Bill and Karen as they are doing their bit for the Triumph scene.
thomas
A Marina one would probably do so, if cheap and handy.
