limiting steering rack

On the spitfire I want to limit the rack movement, as full lock is pointless and has in the past caused the odd MoT problem (ie wheel turns so far it touches stuff, can be sorted, but I want a different approach this time)

I think there was a factory or aftermarket mod, basically putting a spacer onto the rack. But anybody know how big?

One of my parts lists or manuals has the original letter from the ST detailing the mod. Not sure which one though so bear with me while I search it out,

Clive, on the 2nd rack i took to bits, a Spitty one, there was a 1/2 inch brass ring on the passenger side,
but nin ont other end..
you can put them on with rack on, split and glue.
but best done off the car.  its not a greet job takin the rack to bits.

drivers side needs to be bigger OD than passenger side, as it fits in a bigger wol.

Mine were made out of nylon bar.    and the sizes i ended up with still give plenty of lock,
maybe too much, so may even reduce them a bit moer.
so I would make em 1 3/8 - to -1 1/2  inch long.

As you can see from the date on the letter, this was quite an early mod. The implication is that later racks would incorporate the change, but it should help with the how-to for further mods.

that just seems a  TOTAL  waste of time, it will reduce bogg all at all,  in my mind
MAY, just stop tyres rubbing on roll bar,thats all.
go for what I did,  very easy.

I just knew there was something from the factory. Must agree with Marcus though 1/8" is pretty small! Will have a fiddle later, probably the weekend when the temps reach a few degrees!
