chazchas
I now have my spit on the road and is brilliant, the only fault is when you go over a rough road the steering wheel shakes vibratingthough the Column, all the suspension and rack mountains are new and the is no play in the column as I can detect. is this standard or is there a cure. CHRIS211083
Did you use rubber rack mounts or alloy???What tyre pressure are you running.Did you get wheel alignment checked???Also what universal column joint did you use there are rubber bushed ones and solid ones.Chris. stevegt6
Every one of mine has done that (2 spits and 2 GT6) - the bushed rack mounts do give a bit of 'damping' but not much... I have solid mounts and solid joint and whilst very precise, you do feel a bit more from the roads - especially the crap roads in uk.Try to drive less in built up areas where full of grids, manholes, potholes, cracks, steel plates (where workers cant be arsed doing proper repairs and just chuck a big plate on road.......small rant over lol)Once out in the countryside, it is much smoother :)Have you got adjustable dampers - back them right off for around town.....makes a big difference
chazchas
Thanks, Rubber rack Mounts, will check Tyre pressures had new ones fitted so haven't checked. wheel alignment done, its the original universal column joint.will look into that, and get backnot adjustable shocks, as you say its fine on smooth roads but unfortunately I live in Redditch. And like most towns the roads are abysmal
uksnatcher
I had exact same problem, replaced the original 'o' ring comfort universal joint for a solid type and nipped up the column slider.Lots of wear in the universal joint 'o' rings will cause rattle in the steering wheel, designed to have some comfort play but no looseness, you can get repair kits or just replace the 'o' rings or go for a replacement solid universal joint type for a direct steering feel. The Escort group 4 steering u/j fits perfectly:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-ESCORT-MK1-MK2-GROUP-4-STEERING-COUPLING-KNUCKLE-UNIVERSAL-JOINT-MLR-NL-/151324490490?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item233ba47afaThere is a slider assembly at the bottom of the column (above the pedals) that is designed to slide in a crash and not having a face full of steering wheel, it has a grub screw and a lock nut to nip the slider to the column, if it has slight wear it will rattle through the steering wheel, just crack off the lock nut and nip the grub screw up tighter, then lock the nut again. Velocita Rosso
The majority of `new` owners of Spitfires and similar, have never had the experience of driving such cars and try and compare to a modernWhen I bought my first Spitfire from a car showroom I thought it was the bees knees ......as they were the modern of the day and you new no differentNow , when I get out of my Subaru and into the Spitfire I wonder why I ever bought another............except for the fact you can mend it on the side of the road ..........like we normally do ;)They really are bone shakers.....I have all the best on the Spitfire from Superflex to AVO adjustables............and after the 10 CR etc, I crawl out of the cockpit with all bones creaking.....at which point certain members deal out Ibuprofen tablets ;D...... The best advice is .....you fit all the best you can, relating bushes and suspension and then know you know you can do no more :)

Old bones mate, never mind good stuff on the Spit...you need some grease nipples on the elbows, hips and knees....told you before, Indian Brandee for everything....... will sort your wind problems out too :P ;D
CHRIS211083
Glass of port for me. Stops all my aches..........Till the next morning. Ha Ha.To stop the bone shaking I would recommend progressive front springs. I got them from a guy who lives in Russia and they make the car handle great as well as soft over bumps.Chris. Pete Lee
Can't say I have any steering wheel vibration, yes you can feel the road and the ride is firm especially with uprated suspension. Pot holes do send a shock through the car.On the whole my car gets better, replaced the upper steering column bush and the car felt so much more like it should.Back in the day the suspension was always "sporty", The roads of Birmingham back in the late 70's were just as bad as they are now - how we long for the past ;D.Dont expect the car to be modern, you're rear end is only a few inches off the road, this was designed as a traditional British sports car, enjoy :)
CHRIS211083
The rear end should be lovely over the bumps. I've got lovely rear end suspention over bumps. The front is harder and heavier damped but should be soft and flexible over bumps. If it aint then adjust or replace worn bits.Chris. chazchas
Thanks for all the tips, I have ordered new column bushes and I will do the adjustments mentioned, as I say all the suspension front and rear are new. the car drives and rides great it's just this shake when you go over a rough road the steering wheel vibrates and rattles
mjwman
I have experienced that over the years but now my spit is firm and shake free unles it is a big pot hole!Firstly the bigest contributor is wheel bearings in my experience. Just enough play is what yopu want. Too much and you shake.Next is tyre pressures. Too hard and you have another piece of the jigsaw. On 175/70 13s I run at no more than 24psiNext , the colum brace that bolts to the dash. Make sure it is bolted tight at both ends.Column bushes dontv wear that much on 1500s at least so one of the last to checkUJ certainly helps if there is no play. The rack and mounts on yours seem fine so IMHO check mout my first 3 points. rotoflex
The report of a shaking & rattling steering wheel also makes me think of the column brace at the dash.

Chris.Chris, I wasn't referring the the cars rear end :XYes could be in the brackets, have you fitted polybush or rubber suspension bushes? CHRIS211083
I went for polybush Blue all round mate as I want it to absorb the bumps not transmit them through to me. Most go for red but then complain the cars ride is harsh. Saying that everyones different and many told me the Monza exhaust is very loud but to me it's quieter than the 2" large bore most people go for. Go figure??? I would recommend the Blue polybush on everything. Chris.
chazchas
i have it sorted, the main problem was movement it the top and bottom clamps, i replaced the column bushes and put rubber in the main clamps. lowered the tyre pressure to 24psi from 30psi. it now drives beautifully, many thanks for all your help your advice cured it
stevegt6
That's good news - might just check my tyre pressure too...lol Funny sometimes how a few little things transform the ride/handling etc.... Also, regards shakes n rattles and not sure how recent you have had it back on road from rebuild, but if only recent, be sure to check all nuts n bolts at least once a week after use whilst it all beds in. smithy
I've got polybush red - too harsh. I'll be going blue sometime later in the year.If you've got wire wheels fitted, check they're not falling to bits.
