WIMPUS
Hi, I have seen that i have some play on the steering (Late 1500).. i know it's the ''KNUCKLE JOINT'' How do you change it ? do i need to get the steering rack loose? ::)And must there be a grease nippel on the steering rack ? :-/ i have not got one :PBut i have seen also that i have some play on the steering column.. :-/It's on the bracket on the second photo ;)What to do about that ?? :-/
drofgum
Wim,Just below the bracket in picture two there is a clamp. Removing the clamp by undoing the two bolts will allow the lower steering shaft to slide into the upper shaft. So, you can undo the steering knuckle and slide the shaft to get the knuckle off the rack. Then you can remove the knuckle from the lower steering shaft. Both the bracket you show and the one farther up the column have felt packings to help tighten them without causing noise. The felt probably has been crushed too thin to hold the column. Adding some more felt would probably tighten the column in the brackets. It is normal to have a blanking plug in the steering rack. The plug gets removed and a grease fitting substituted when the rack is to be lubricated. The plug is then replaced as it holds the earth connections to the column. All the best, Paul

Mik
1317 wrote:The plug is then replaced as it holds the earth connections to the column.I don't think that's true for the later cars. It's a while since I looked at mine (which are both in pieces anyway at the moment) but I think only the cars with the horn push in the centre of the steering wheel have an earth strap on the steering rack. The later ones (with the horn push on a column stalk) are earthed elsewhere.Wim may have the type with the earth strap for all I know (though I'd think a 1978 car would have the later switchgear) but just in case anyone is wondering why they can't find this connection on their car... Velocita Rosso
Ironic....just changed mine tonightI just removed lower clamp bolt loosened bracket and slid the whole column into the cockpit, removed upper bolt then removed the UJ/knuckle and replaced in reverse .However I will redo another day as I want to fit a solid metal joint, common to the Escort Mexico,as they do not wear out re the rubber joints
