GreenV8Machine
my steering rack is shafted, as is the rubber joint. Going to replace the lot, but Ive been getting a noise like a goose honk from around the top of the steering column. Any ideas?

Lord Sorbington
I think there is a bearing at the top of the steering column or maybe the steering wheel is fouling on the column shroud. It's not your horn going off is it? Had that on my BMW once, it went off at the most inopportune of moments when I was steering, most embarrassing.Don't know about a mk1 but on a mk2 there are all sorts of gubbins in the column shroud to do with self cancelling indicators and stuff, could make weird noises if it's fallen apart. However, I'd go with Robroy's goose theory, it seems the most likely.
