mazfg
Just wonderijng how easy it is to get this off. I can see the big nut on the column(not sure what size it is)...and wondered how easy it is to come off onece this nut has been removed? Thanks
Clive
I can't remember the size, but I have used a slightly larger metric 6 point socket (27mm rings a bell, but that is my iffy memory).Once the nut is off, put it back on so that all thrads on the nut are just on the column. Then sit and pull on the wheel, wiggle it a bit. A good whack with a hammer (soft faced good idea, or a bit of hardwood in there) while pulling may be needed. You then find out why the nut wants to be on the column ;)
pimp my vit
Be careful and remove the horn pen like contact brush first or it will snap in half........
garyf
I think Clive is right, 1 1/16" or 1 1/8" AF is about the size I reckon? You may find it comes off no trouble, put putting the nut back on is safer ;D
Zendervision
1 1/16" is correct assuming it's the same size as the Herald.
Paudman
1 1/16" socket for the Herald, and lightly - LIGHTLY! - tap the steering wheel from behind as you gently try to pull it upwards. Use too much force and it'll hit you square in the forehead. A two or three legged puller with the legs covered to prevent damage works for me. mazfg
Thanks guys, borrowed a 1 1/16" skt from work, unscrewed and popped off nice n easy with a little wiggle. Removed the boss with stalks/ wiring etc, needs a good old cleanup and re-spray and some attention on the switches too. The steering column bush...has worn down to simple a white piece of nylon....no rubber on it whatsoever....new one of those required for sure! marktheherald
There's two of those bushes in there, top and bottom...
thescrapman
The rubber is round the outside of teh white nylon, not the inside in case you wondered.CheersColin
mazfg
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-209423 so, I need 2 of these, one top and one down the bottom.....best check the other end of things then!
Casper
The bottom one doesn't wear as badly. To anticipate your next question you can drill out the plugs to remove the old one, but most just push them further in, as long as there aren't half a dozen in there already!C.
