Stuart Wilson
May be a basic/simple question so I apologise. My Moss is Herald based, my question is about front springs/shockers.Do the springs have to be compressed on the car before removal, or is there a top mount keeping them compressed
JohnD
Standard springs definitely must be removed with a spring compressor! But if shorter stiffer springs have been fitted then when the car is up on stands and the suspension is fully down the springs may be loose on the shockers. Then, a compressor is not needed.John
Stuart Wilson
Thanks for that, it has standard springs/shocks
Steve P
I did remove a standard compressed spring from a shock once and the top nut went into orbit.S
Dogsbody47uk
I am confused by the question. If it is standard Herald Front suspension then it can be removed as a unit ie. shock absorber and coil spring as one unit. getting the spring and shock absorber apart then requires a coil spring compressor. See Steve p's comment!
Nick Jones
On the original Triumphs at least, the combined spring/damper unit is fixed to the lower wishbone by one bolt and to the suspension tower by 3 nuts at the top. This complete unit can be removed from the car without a spring compressor provided the centre nut is in place. To remove the spring from the damper you do need spring compressors (and many of the universal types are too big to fit properly) to compress the spring before undoing the centre nut. Care needed, there is alot of energy stored......Nick
Jonny-Jimbo
It's one job I hate after throwing a top nut on a damper unit - made a bloody big clang and the nut went through the shed wall near enough!UNITs CAN be removed from the car complete without a spring compressor. But not the individual spring - as has been said further up the post. Now I always put a ratchet strap around the spring and compressors in case they slip in use, it at least holds them vaguely in place. Stuart Wilson
Thank you for the repliesSo to take the spring/shocker assy from the car no spring compressor -- which was the bit I was asking aboutThen obviously a compressor is needed to take spring from shocker
