rotoflex/cv conversion

Hugh

Recommended Posts

I know that this is an old question asked and explained by many and many times but can some one please list what I would need to diy convert my GT6 rotoflex to a  Volvo/Rover 100 cv conversion I want to keep my GT6 rotoflexhub/upright,etc and just replace the rubber doughnut and drive shaft.

Can I please request that all I want is a simple list of parts and qty/required as I have read all the other threads on how to do it.

Thanks  :)

changing the subject slightly, have you seen the TSSSSSSC courier mag article written about disc conversion. Seems VERY simple:
Buy MGF disc and caliper. Plus a pair of early escort rear disc conversion brakets. Think using freelander studs was mentioned too.
Take off hub to remove backplate, a few mods to the escort brakets to correct offset and enlarge bore. Bolt together and use the existing brake cables. Plus fit a new pait of brake hoses.
All looks very simple indeed, BUT that was a swingspring car. Roto cant be that different?

Which version are you planning on.

1 Nick Jones OE using Escort MkIII drive shafts and Volvo inner
2 Josh Bowler version using MGF hubs / Rover 100 driveshafts and Volvo inner
3 Canley Classics Triumph based conversion using 1500 FWD CV's and Spitfire 1500 prop CV inner.

Rover 100 conversion does not keep the Triumph hub, only 1 & 3 do that

Gosh,
Last year, I was scouring the country looking for these.  Well, I rang at least six suppliers and found ONE in the whole UK!
Eventually I bought a pair of Volvo drive shafts from a specialist dismantler, and so have a spare pair (two/shaft).
The used ones had zero wear!

Having dismantled a good number of these (>50 now), I've only ever seen one that was knackered and that was due to water ingress via a split gaiter.  They vary from "still stiff to operate" on the lower mileage ones to "nicely freed up".  The ones I took from a 180k mile car were nicely freed up.  The ones I originally put on my car from an accident damaged 25k mile car and were downright tight.  They've freed up nicely after 25k more miles on the Vitesse.

I think you meant to say that the front wheels swivel James......  :P

Option 3 doesn't use Volvo lobros.....

Not sure about the ebay ones.  I had always believed that the 360 (2.0L) ones were different but he seems to be saying all the same.  Good price - never seen them offered new before.

Nick

Thanks Nick

So Option 3 is out for me as I would not see my way to spending that amount of money on two driveshafts assemblies.
I have bought two of the Lobros on ebay so  I will have to deside which way to go.
Can anyone tell me the I/D of the GT6 bearing housing where the shaft fits please.

I have found a driveshaft with inner and outer CV it has the correct number of splines and to be the right length. So I have ordered 2 lefthand side ones and plan to fit them. Looks like they may not have the same issues with shims as the Ford CV joints.
Well I will see when they are delivered :)

I bought some of the Volvo CV joints off ebay as I want to do the conversion on my GT6 at some point in the future. They have 24 splines so not sure if they are the correct ones as I thought I read somewhere that the ones to use have 22 splines. Can't remember where I read it. I am in the process of finally fitting some of TLD sliding spline shafts to my vitesse rebuild so wont be touching the GT6 for several months yet.

Hi Hugh
Are you saying that you may have found some shafts that have 24 spline or will you be using 22 spline Volvo LoBro's. Does anybody know if the R100 shafts will fit directly into a Subaru CV joint. Started to get a whine from the GT6 diff and maybe change to another make of diff.

Cheers

I can not help with the Scooby diff info but I am sure someone has fitted one on here somewhere.

Oh yes it has 24 splines so I will be using the volvo lobro.

So were those Volvo 360 CV's rather than Volvo 340 / 343 CV's?
They are 24 spline so I guess they are Volvo 360 which is ok for what I want to do.
I have got a driveshaft that Has 23 splines on the outer and 24 on the inner so I will use the Volvo LoBro as it is a bigger stronger CV joint than the one I will remove from the new shaft.
