Paulrobbo
Hi all. Another stupid question :) The gearbox on my newly aquired 1500 (I've promised my wife I'll keep this one for at least 6 months :)) ) came with a noisy gearbox. That's why I got it cheap. I did think it may be low oil as the OD was also temperamental. However, when I went to top it up earlier, through a hole cut in the tunnel cover, a tip I picked up on the forum, about half a litre of oil drained out. It was clean so was probably replaced recently. My question is, could to much oil cause a noisy box and temperamental OD. If not I may be looking for a replacement gearbox :) I'm a bit worried and don't want to drive it until i get it sorted now. Thanks. Nick Jones
Not really. The most likely outcome of too much oil is even more leakage than usual. I reckon the oil has been added in an attempt to disguise the issues. The OD problem may only be electrical but the noise is more serious.Nick
Paulrobbo
Thanks Nick, I Fear A Recon Gearbox Will Be Needed
yorkshire_spam
Hey Paul,I've just done a rebuild on a single rail 4 speed for an OD. It's not a terrible job, say 90 quids worth of parts, (bearings, gaskets, synchros, layshaft etc.)Although I suppose getting a recon would get you back on the road faster.Cheers,Sam

MikeTeesside
Seeing as it has a top breather, I thought any excess would just splurt out? If you have an unblocked breather of course.
