glang
I see that Daihatsu Hijet/Piaggio Porter vans have a loverly compact 5 speed rear wheel drive gearbox. I know the ratios probably arent ideal and its not designed for so much torque but I would love to have that extra gear - anyone fitted one or even considered it? Rallyspit
Or fit an overdrive and have two extra gears?
GT6 M
I no 2 ladds up this area wid Midgets, and they fitted the box into themits the same box as the Suzi vans, they 75 HP as standard, so should cope easily with a standard T engine, so a Spitty should be no probsM
don cook1
Is this one? Separate bellhousing - good, complicated gearchange - bad.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DAIH.....?hash=item3aaf454aea
glang
Yeh I know its not ideal but as much as I love my Vitesse I want a whine free box with modern smooth gear change that will allow me to cruise at motorway speeds without the need for a complicated electro-hydraulic lump on the end of it
Jonny-Jimbo
Not sure if that box will do that - with it being for a 1.3L van, there's a good chance the gears will be totally wrong. Worth looking into though - nothing wrong with being original in thinking. I wonder what the gear ratios are...
Jonny-Jimbo
Quick Google Shows;Hijet (1.3L efi)3.769 (1st)2.0451.3761.0000.838 (5th)Final Drive 4.44In my head that'd give you a 4th gear top speed of about 85mph if using the original Vitesse Diff... So still not relaxed cruising.
Nick Jones
The Hijet 'box pictured in the ebay ad looks like a pretty impossible prospect. Bell housing is not removable, that is the gearbox casing split point (like many modern BMW boxes), gearchange linkage designed for cable change and so on. Also, while it would be ok power wise for the 4 pot Triumphs, the sixes would soon kill it anyway.Nick
GT6 M
the Vans are v v low geared, so if wanting a cruiser, ye gotta have a 3.27 diff with them ratios.a 3.63 at a push I no they been fitted to Midgets, but not sure how it was done, but at least the bell housings separate.will prob need a full clutch set up, and some form of modding the OE bell to the box, prop altered, , spedo drive, mountingsif its done on Midgets wid the same basic type box, there maybe a converter plate already med forit,!!!Go have a digg aboot on the Midget forums,!!!M
Jonny-Jimbo
Well, late Midgets did use the Triumph engine in a form, so it might be do-able on a Spitfire 1500 / Herald 1500.
don cook1
If you are going down that route then I would heartily recommend a Ford Type 9. Easy to fit, good ratios and super snicky gear-lever. This is mine that has had the original lever cut off at the rubber damper and a thread put on. Sierra gearknob.Interior not all replaced or tidied - sorry about that. don cook1
Well Marcus, it looks better from above...if you can see it!Have to say its a lovely snicky-snack gear change - no effort at all.
heraldcoupe
Quoted from Jonny-Jimbo Hijet (1.3L efi)3.769 (1st)2.0451.3761.0000.838 (5th) 1-4 are very close to Herald ratios...Cheers,Bill.
Jonny-Jimbo
Yup, but wasn't this discussion about using in a Vitesse? So a little short geared for that.Possibly good for Herald though!
