What is the gold coloured finish on the front brake calipers?

I'm wondering what finish to have done when I rebuild mine

Is this finish tough or not?

It seems to have worn of most cars, but I guess that because they're 40+ years old!

Its Cadmium plating.

Doesn't last long when exposed to salt and brake dust and rain!

For the original look why not repaint with the cadmium look alike paint finish supplied by Frosts, asssuming you don't want to get them replated

It isn't actually Cadmium plating, it is zinc plated and then irridescent yellow passivated.

Gives a cadmium look.

Real Cadmium plating isn't actually now available to the general public due to health concerns. the corrosion salts are carcinogenic. (see, my chemistry lessons were not in vain)

cheers
