bilk
I gave my car a bit of a hammering before taking it off the road this week to change the engine. Then today when taking the exhaust off I noticed that the gearbox had leaked some oil onto the exhaust pipe near where the gearbox meets the prop.Is this something that needs urgent attention and if so would the gearbox need to come out to sort it?It's an od box that was only fitted a couple of hundred miles ago and I was planning to leave in in the car for the engine swap. Thanks for any advice,Phil
CharlieB
Sounds like the rear oil seal in the end of the overdrive. I just replaced mine but the gearbox was on the bench. In theory you can do it with the box in the car after removing the propshaft but the flange nut is on VERY tight, undo it while its still attached to the engine. If you're taking out the engine anyway why not take out the box as well? Also check its not leaking from the speedo drive.Charlie
bilk
Thanks Charlie. I am not keen on disturbing the box, partly because I don't want to remove the interior and partly because the od was working well before and I don't want to jinx anything.Phil
CharlieB
You'll have to remove the gearbox tunnel if you want to replace the oil seal.
