Jason1969
I'm progressing quite well with the rebuild now. I had the chance to fit a newly refurbed seat in today. However the feel of the car has changed substantially. I expected to be higher up and I assume that this will drop as I use the car and the new foams begin to compress. My main concern is how close the Mountney wheel now is? With the Boss and the wheel fitted and the column extended to accomodate the wheel it doesn't feel very good:Are there any aftermarket wheels which simply bolt on and require no boss or movement of the column?I'm glad I kept the original wheel as I will be changing this back which is a shame. thescrapman
You might be able to move the whole column back a little bit.Do you have a side on shot of the wheel?

smithy
Jason - I'd like to see a side shot too, since mine's a Mountney (are you reading this btw peter? Mines a Mountney!!!) - and it fits just fine. I'll take comparison shots for you if/when.
aar0sc
I'm 6' 3", and with a TR7-style cowl and Mountney steering wheel there's plenty of space for my gangly legs and arms! :P(also note my multicoloured shirt 8) ).

The column stalks are all able to be reached easily without taking one's hand of the wheel, including the O/D stalk.
smithy
Aaron, you need to put that wheel centre boss straight. ;)

Peter McEvedy
I have to agree - It took me ages to get mine exactly right - even a couple of degrees out would drive me crazy! :)
rotoflex
It's the shift pattern on the gearshift knob being twisted a little to the left that I notice.

A few layers of tape round the circumference fixed that.
Jason1969
This looks a little shorter?http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p7553/Mountney-Boss-for-TR7-AND-SPITFIRE-1977-ONWARDS/product_info.htmlAnyone used this one?

Won't fit yours. I've tried this type - had to cut the cowling to fit it and the wheel was a good few inches closer to me.
Jason1969
How about this one?https://www.europaspares.com/product/181/18469/BOSS_KITS/SPRINGALEX_BOSS_KITS/M_Range_Boss_For__Tr4__Tr5__Tr6_Spitfire___1976_On__kk1029.html

Yours is the traditional type. uksnatcher
Yup, that boss you have fitted is too deep..not designed to fit the plastic cowling.Mountney traditional (yours) wheel have a 6x fixing bolt PCD of 100mm on the bossMountney M series wheel has PCD of 70mm (same as Momo/OPM/Sparco)This is the one you want for the 79 spit with 48 spline column with plastic cowling with traditional Mountney wheel:http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-BOSS3

So the TR7 style cowling will fit this no problem without alteration?
uksnatcher
No alteration required, the TR7 cowling is different to the Spitfire 1500 cowling, a bit shorter but i know what you mean. The rimmers boss will allow the steering wheel to sit further down into the spits cowling. Looking at the pic you should be able to move the column down a good distance for a more comfortable fit using the spits cowlings. If you need to use a TR7 cowling to add a few more cm's heres a comparison of the cowlings:
