Talkwrench
Guys whats the biggest tyre you can stuff under a Herald without modifying the guards? Ive got 175x70x13's on 6" mags however I would really like to get the tallest rear tyres I can get on those 13" rims .. My gearing is terrible with the bigger motor its not even worth me using 1st gear , revs up far too quick..
andy thompson
You need a 3.27 diff + possibly different driveshaft flanges - Ask David Markich 9271 4834 if he has one - they were fitted to automatic dolomite 1850 so relatively common. Nick Jones
Failing the 3.27 diff a 3.63 diff (Spit 1500, dolly 1500 auto, TR7 4 speed). If you are still on the Herald 4.11 diff anything else will be an improvement!Nick
andy thompson
Only 1850 dollys in oz - most TR7 are 5 speed - never seen a 4 speed here?
Paudman
You can get a tractor tyre under one; gets it right off the ground for changing wheels etc.
Talkwrench
I believe its a vitesse diff in there , I think the ratio by my workings out is roughly 3.7, did they have something like that? IS the diff hard to change?
andy thompson
Vitesse diff is 3.89 Spit (1500) diff is 3.63 - rareish in Oz?3.27 is best for cruising in any 2.5 small chassis - they can be weak if abused- but so can any small chassis diffDiff change is a bit fiddly but perfectly possible

IS the diff hard to change? Just done mine and had a 2" exhaust in the way. They're not light at all and that's the major issue. Getting them out is easy and use a trolley jack with a wide piece of wood on it to stabilise it. also, the higher the car the easier it'll be. Getting it back can be a faff. Especially if you've replaced the rear bushes.
Talkwrench
Kind of why I was thinking of getting a bigger tyre in there and saving all the expense and hassle ..
