rotoflex
When I first got the Neon, I checked for decent-priced tires the weekend conemonkeys were using on their daily driver Neons, & many recommended Falken Ziex's.They were nice & sticky when it wasn't wet, but scooted like a pat of butter on a hot skillet in the wet! All those other folks came from places where there's so little rain, they call a drizzle rain!Tire Rack's web site has ratings along different categories for the tires they sell, individually & compared with others.http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=SP+Sport+A2+Plushttp://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=HPASI found it useful for buying tires. Different brands & models may be available over there (it's hard to get 13" sizes over here), & the price comparisons will be in dollars.
Fizzy
cheers for the info. i've found another tyre site similar to black circles and e-tyres, but they have a much larger range than those 2 for the size i need for my car, so they now look like the best bet. the site is called tyre-shopper.co.uk.seen as i now have a much better choice of standard size tyre for my wheels, i'll stick with the standard size as suggested by a few of you. sorry for the mish-mash of my posts, i know nothing of tyres (other than mine suck) and am learning as i look for new ones.so ignoring my other list of choices, anybody got experience with these tyres and/or tyre-shopper.co.uk itself ?http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=14513BA1T Barum (continental)http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=14513TO1T toyohttp://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=14513UN2T uniroyalhttp://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=14513AV1T avonhttp://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=14513CT30T continentalhttp://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=14513PR1T pirellihttp://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=14513BR1T bridgestoneas you can see the choice is much greater than from the other sites. i will definitely be getting something from this selection. they do some michelins, but they are a bit out of my price range. im guessing experience with any of these will be hard to come by as so few of you seem to have these tiny wheels fitted ;D
thescrapman
A 145/80will leave teh car even more under geared. You need to be trying to match a 5.20-13 crossply. That gives a 165/80-13. I think.A 155/80-13 is a better compromise.Go in search of a set of 4.5J rims. Then you can have teh 175/70-13's.CheersColin
Raider
Colin, our (Michelin) tech data book from the 70s says 5.20 13s were standard and 145/80R13 were the recommended fitment.Personally given the budget constraint I would go for good quality 145/80R13s against second hand 4.5J wheels and cheaper 175/70R13s. thescrapman
You might be able to pick up a set of 4.5J vitesse / late mk3 / 1360 estate rims for next to nothing. Will allow you to enhance your choices for a similar outlay.I think I am cleaned out of 4.5J hubcap type rims now, Mike Banks took the last ones. Or I would help you out.CheersColin
Fizzy
ahh right. i wasn't aware they were fitted to anything other than the spit. thats trebled my chances of getting some ;D.
neilnaz
Fizzy I am in Hertfordshire and have 4 4.5J standard Spitfire 1500 rims that you can have for nothing. They do have tyres on them but these are not up to much and one has lost pressure. They need replacement for definite. The wheels are totally useable and I had them on my Spitfire until I got Revs. They would benefit from a wire brush and paint. They are not like your rims so you might not want them.If not anyone else before they go to the scrappie?
soooty
dont know what width your wheels are but i have the same problem in my gt6. i put federal tyres on it just to get it through its mot. i fnd that i can bearly touch the accelerator at all on even a damp road without the rear wheels spinning. i have no grip at the front either and when turning full lock even at 1 or 2 mph the car will skid forward in a stright line. i'm putting some 185 yokos on the rear soon .. i'l let you know if that makes any difference. i might try some spacers as well as i can't see how putting the rear wheels so close together is clever- if i'd wanted a trike i'd have bouth one lol. Fizzy
neilnaz - thanks for the offer, but tempting as it is i really like the look of the original mk3 wheels so i'll have to pass, thanks.
neilnaz
Fizzy no problems. I will be going to the recycling centre with a fair amount of stuff and noone seems to want standard 4.5J wheels. Best of luck with your wheel and tyre hunt. For what it is worth I think your wheels look good as they are. I wouldn't swap MkIII wheels for MkIV/1500 wheels they do not look right....... Fizzy
it'd be nice to think nothing off our cars got scrapped, as once its gone its gone. sort of.looking at my manual, 145 is the right tyre size, though no indication of profile. it states i should have 21 psi at the front and 26 at the back. does that sound any good ?as for tyres, i've decided to stick with the same wheels (for now) and get good, new tyres at 145/80/13. i;ve narrowed it down to either :Pirelli P3000Continental Eco contact 3.they're about the same price fitted, balanced etc, the pirellis coming in about a tenner cheaper overall. i've read some reviews, and barring the expected odd "i ran over a twig and my sidewall blew out" comment, 99% of people have been extremely impressed with them. i wanted to look on which? car, but ou have to pay, so stuff that.anybody got experience with the tyres mentioned, or can get on which? car and tell me the review results ?cheers
Nick Moore
I think the quoted pressures are for cross-ply tyres, which had harder sidewalls than radials and therefore ran lower pressures. Everyone has their own pressure preferences, I like my Herald with 26psi front, 28 rear.
GT6 John
Per the Continental website the Eco contact 3 won Best Buy at Which? in March 2008.

Makes it fun though!!!!!CheersTim.
