Thanks Tim I am getting all the bits needed for the job to do as a winter project ;) how is the car rear handling now

complete rubbish!!
I took the lowering block out tonight and found it is 1" thick!!  What was i thinking!!!!! I am going to get it machined down to 1/2" or maybe a 1/4" but for the time being i'm going to rebuild it to standard height and take it for a ride to see what difference it makes.

Having seen the nice stuff on your driveway that you are used to driving :)

Don't expect miracles from your GT6 ,  compared to your modern stuff ;)

Might I suggest (if you have not yet had it done) a full 4 wheel alignment on one of those laser setups.

I did it just before the 10 countries run and it is the best thing I have done to my GT6. It makes a hell of a difference when all the wheels are working together and not fighting each other :o ;D 8)

Interesting.... are those MGF discs and calipers?  Seems to be more room on swing axle rear end....

Well spotted Nick.  Very easy conversion on swing spring.  Loads of room.  You have to be careful of the handbrake cable it can foul the inner arch so some mods to the way it connects to the caliper is required.  I did send my old shafts to Mike Papworth who set the clearence between disc and caliper when he refurbed the shafts for me.  The caliper fouls the inside of the disc so you need to press the inner hub onto the shaft an extra 5-6mm from standard.

Hey steve
I am comparing it to phils early MK3 (the red pi one) He has sliding spline rear shafts so he doesn'r suffer from camber change.  I haven't even had the tracking done following the rebuild so i'm not supprised it don't handle.  I am going to sort the  camber on the rear first and make the tie rods adjustable then take it and have it 4 wheel aligned.  I will need some fast road settings if anyone can help?

Hi Rob

disc and caliper from an MGF.  I don't have pics of the brackets but I used a bit of plate and welded it up.  You can use Ford escort conversion brackets a bit like these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Capri-Escort-rear-axle-disc-conversion-brackets-13-/320623067929?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4aa69fc319#ht_500wt_969

BUT you need to modify them so much to fit that you may as well make your own.

I'll butt in here (have fitted mgf rears on my rotoflex) yes, mgf have a handbrake facility, yes mgf disc fits over the wheelstuds. On my setup (custom brackets) I had to faff a lot to get them to fit under a 13" steel wheel, they do fit. Just.

Hugh Glossop did this conversion ages ago, and used the std rear handbrake cable. He may have used different brackets on the end of the cable, really cannot remember, but it seemed to be quite simple. His ran under 15" mgf alloys so lots of space.

bit tricky without taking it all to bits but you can see the flat plate between the hub and bearing grease cap.  Very simple just a square plate with a couple of legs welded on to locate the caliper.  I didn't have any issues with fitting them inside 13" wheel using MGF disc.

Tim,

Have you fitted a front to rear brake bias valve?

If not how do you find the front to rear balance?

Hi Tim

Sorry for the delay in replying.  I don't have a bias valve because i have the Canley 4 pot caliper and vented disc conversion.  When i had the capri disc setup i could lock the rears before the fronts ??) ??) ??) Almost rear ended Royboy at oulton park!!   I would have fitted the bias valve if the capri disc would have fitted with Canley alloy hubs but they didn't!

I think if you fit the mgf rear's then you MUST fit a bias valve
